Phonics

"If a child memorises 10 words, the child can only read 10 words. But if a child learns 10 sounds, the child will be able to read 350 three sound words, 4320 four sound words and 21650 five sound words." Martin Kozloff

How we teach Phonics:

Children in nursery are taught Phase 1 phonics to help them listen, identify and copy the sounds they hear around them in everyday life. They are introduced to books without words to develop their book talk. In Year R and 1 children have a daily phonics session and work through phases 2 to 5 using Bug Club Phonics (click here to find out more). They use decodable phonics books to practise and apply their learning. Children in Year 2 and 3 are taught phonics alongside spelling rules as they move into Phase 6. They use Bug Club Phonics and Spelling Shed to support their learning. They move from reading decodable phonics books to Accelerated Reader books (matched to their reading level) to practise and apply their learning.
